This tall obelisk was installed in 1917 by the State of New York to honor the NY Union Army units who participated in the siege of Vicksburg.

"The New York State Memorial is located on Grant Avenue at milepost 4.8 of the park tour road. The 43-foot tall obelisk was constructed from Mount Airy (NC) Granite. The memorial features two bronze inscription tablets measuring 5' 7" x 2' 4" and cost $11,636.83. Plans for the memorial were prepared by A.J. Zabriskie. The New York State Memorial was formerly dedicated on Wednesday, Oct 17, 1917, on the occasion of the National Memorial Reunion and Peace Jubilee. The memorial was formally transferred to the United States by Col. Andrew D. Baird, a veteran of the 79th New York Infantry Regiment, who served as a representative of Col. Lewis R. Stegman, chairman of the New York Monuments Commission."

"NEW YORK
The final state memorial in the Grant’s Headquarters area of the park is the New York Memorial (left). This monument is a 40 ft tall granite obelisk dedicated on October 17, 1917. New York had three infantry regiments and one battery of artillery present during the siege; all four units were with the 9th Corps."
