Visitors to a wayside just off Hyatt Prairie Rd will see four placards at this wayside describing native birds to Hyatt Lake and provide good birdwatching opportunities, particularly from a large, dead tree just yards from the placards.
The first placard highlights America's national bird, the bald eagle which frequents Hyatt Lake and is sometimes seen snatching a meal from another bird, hence the 'Majestic Pirate' title. The second placard highlights the most widely distributed and best known of all North American waterfowl, the Canada goose. The third placard highlights the double-breasted cormorant, an odd-looking bird whose habits here at Hyatt Lake are particularly unattractive to visitors and anglers because of their odorous nests and pig-like grunts and hisses they make. The last placard highlights the osprey, known for diving high and fast down to the water below and snatching up a fish to carry off to its nest.
