This huge iron cannon was built in 1449. It was given to King James II of Scotland by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy in 1454 to help him against the English. Mons Meg was used in sieges up to the 16th century, and later for ceremonial reasons. On such an occasion, its barrel burst and rendered the cannon unusable in 1680. The cannon has now been restored and is displayed in the grounds of Edinburgh castle in front of St. Margareth's chapel.

Please note that there is an entrance fee for the castle.
