Some time ago William and Mary Bingham threw out their son and daughter. The son and daughter sped off in their car and crashed and drowned in the local pond. The body of the daughter, Jennifer, was never found. William and Mary live in their stately pile surrounded by piles of old newspaper and empty pizza boxes.

A social worker, Gerry Dawkins, is not admitted when he calls on William and Mary. He then visits a local artists community, headed by Maggie Vivani and Adam Grace, and is given a ducking in the local pond for his trouble. Dawkins complains to Barnaby about his treatment by the artists. Some time later Dawkins phones Jones, but Jones gives him the cold shoulder. Dawkins is later found drowned near his canoe. He had an appointment to see Maggie and Adam and a picture of the moon in his possessions.

Barnaby hears about the Bingham drownings and is invited to tea by Mary Bingham. When he arrives at the Bingham’s house he finds that Mary has died after a pile of old newspapers fell on her. Jones, meanwhile talks to the Bingham’s retired doctor in his nursing home. The doctor tells Jones that Jennifer Bingham was thrown out of her father’s house because she was pregnant. Unfortunately the doctor dies before he can say who the father is.

Barnaby works out that Maggie Vivani is actually Jennifer and re-introduces her to her other sister, Selina. He reveals that Maggie’s son Ben is the son of Robin, Maggie’s brother. They all go to see William Bingham, only to find that he has rigged a bomb up in his house. Barnaby keeps William talking while Jones un wires the bomb. William had killed Dawkins to keep the family dark secret.
