The episode starts with a road rage incident between a local cycling club and some sports car drivers. A cyclist retaliates against one of the drivers, Clinton Finn, by throwing red paint at the driver at his front gate. A few days later a cyclist, Emily Harte, is found run down on a local road. She has not only been knocked down, but reversed over.

Emily was a member of a local cycle club and was also in a relationship with George Jeffers, a college lecturer and software developer. It becomes apparent to Barnaby that Jeffers was the intended target. Jeffers is threatening to go public with a bug he claims is inherit in Soft Earth’s air control software. Soft Earth’s CEO is Clinton Finn.

Jones takes a paint sample to the local garage owner Daniel Snape, who is repairing the damaged sports car that have had paint thrown at them. Snape doesn’t immediately identify the green paint, but does later. He confronts the owner of the car instead of calling the police. The car owner kills Snape in his garage.

Things come to a head when there is a charity cycle race. Jones is entered in the race to protect Jeffers, whil Barnaby follows a hunch. Barnaby has seen a picture of Snape and a Fellow of the college, Jonathan Canning next to a rally car. Barnaby finds the green rally car and hares off along the cycle race route. He and Jones follow a short cut and find Ned Canning ambushing Jeffers with a barbed wire trap and red paint. Ned Canning is the murderer. He was once college porter and is trying to protect his son’s chances of becoming Principal of the college. If Jeffers blows the whistle on the glitch, the college will suffer financially.
