Set in the time of conscription. Several raw recruits present themselves for training. At the barracks Sergeant Grimshawe is about to retire. These will be his last recruits and his last chance to have led a Star Squad.
The new intake are a shower. There is Charlie Sage, a newly wed, Horace Strong a Hypochondriac, Miles Haywood a layabout, Andy Galloway a rocker, Pete Golightly who is accident prone,and James Bailly a barrack room lawyer.
The training is a disaster, but slowly, the squad take shape. They hear of the sergeant’s wish to have the best squad and pull out all the stops to get the prize.
