This episode centres around the local Territorial Army Centre. Barnaby and Jones are taken there for some team bonding by the new Superintendent. Whilst there a local haulage firm, owned by the TA commander, Colonel Matt Parkes and his wastrel son Jamie, is blown up.

Barnaby investigates the explosion and realises that Jamie Parkes may have been the intended victim of the explosion. Many people have a grudge against Jamie. In particular Penny Galsworth, wife of another TA officer, Captain Tim Galsworthy, stalks Jamie after her daughter killed herself after getting pregnant by Jamie. Captain Galsworthy is also restoring cars for Jamie. Another man with a grudge is George Barkham, another TA soldier, who was to have been offered a partnership with Colonel Parkes until Jamie re-appeared.

Before Barnaby can solve the explosion another body is found in a lake near the TA centre. The dead man was last seen having a row with Jamie outside the local pub. When his car is found it is noticed that his car had been restored at Captain Galsworthy’s garage. The dead man usually lives in France but had parking tickets in London. Barnaby deduces that the dead man’s number plate had been cloned by Jamie and that the dead man wanted to know what the cloning was all about. The death becomes more complicated when the pathologist reveals that the body had been attacked by two people.

Things come to a head when Jamie is found dead in a TA control hut by Penny Galsworthy. It eventually turns out that Jamie had hit the dead man, but his father went back and finished him off. Jamie, himself, was killed accidently by his father when his father confronted him at the hut. The explosion at the haulage plant was set off by George Barkham to try to draw attention to Jamie’s car cloning activities.
