The third of a trilogy depicting the story of Rosie Byefield. In the first part of the trilogy Rosie has taken on the name Angela Wharton and is a serial killer that seeks revenge on the Appleton family by kidnapping the family’s daughter. The second part of the trilogy explains the events that lead up to the kidnapping.

The second part of the trilogy starts with Rosie being met back from University by her father, the Rev David Byefield. She is shocked to find that her father is about to marry a woman called Vanessa. She takes out her anger on the young boy Michael Appleton. Michael is staying with the Byefields whilst his parents go on a second honeymoon.

Despite marrying Vanessa, David Byefield starts an affair with a local woman, Juliana, who is researching a book on a former rector, Francis Youlgrave. Juliana is interested in the journas that Youlgrave kept. During the village fete Rosie destroys the journals, but is caught in the act by Vanessa. Rosie kills Vanessa, but is seen by Michael, who informs on her. Rosie is arrested and vows revenge on the whole family and Michael in particular.

Rosie is committed to a mental hospital, but is released many years later. She is apparently killed in a car crash, witnessed by Angela Wharton.

The third part of the trilopgy deals with Rosie’s childhood. Her father is dean at Roslington Cathedral. Rosie is neglected by her parents and seeks solace with her grandfather, Hugh. Hugh is getting senile and David threatens to put him in a home. Hugh is murdered and Rosie’s mother commits suicide taking the blame. Rosie later admits the killing to Wendy Appleton, Michael’s mother.
