The film Brief Encounter (1945) is one of the great British romantic film classics. Produced by David Lean, the film captures the tentative steps of two middle class individuals, played by Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard, towards an extra marital love affair. A large part of the action takes part in a railway station (shot at Carnforth). The couple meet by accident in the railway waiting room and the affair slowly begins over several further weeks, with the railway station always part of the scenery.
