In Dunstan, Sergeant Jones old home town, a reclusive couple Ron and Libby Wilson are found dead in their cottage. The Wilsons have been reclusive since their son, Michael, was run over. Libby died of natural causes, but Ron appears to have been in a struggle at the top of the stairs and then fallen down the stairs.

Their bodies were found by Lynne Fox, a campaigner against a local bypass that is being built. Later, Jack Purdy, owner of the land the bypass is being built on and major road contractor, has an argument with road protesters and is found dead in his paint spattered car. Again Lynne Fox found the body.

Jack Purdy’s younger brother, Mike, is about to get married to Louise. Jack was to have been the best man, and was also an old flame of Louise. Jones steps in as best man and the wedding proceeds. At the wedding reception Louise has a cigarette break and is stabbed in the garden. Her body has a number of cigarette burns on it.

Charlotte Knight is a friend of bride and groom, and is also the photographer. She notices a face at the window of the reception. Before she can tell someone her photography studio is torched. Fortunately, Charlotte is saved and the photography disk is given to Jones.

When Barnaby and Jones delve into the past they find that Jack and Mark Purdy and Louise and Charlotte all went around in a gang. Barnaby and Jones wonder whether the face in the photograph is that of a boy, Patrick Bradley, who went missing some 19 years ago, a year after Michael Wilson was run over by Jack Purdy’s dad. Mark Purdy is brought in for questioning and confesses that the gang of four had mistreated Patrick with cigarette burns and drowned him. They had thrown his body and his bike down a well.

When Barnaby and Purdy go to the well they find the road protester, that vandalised Jack Purdy’s car, hiding down the well. Patrick’s bike is down there, but Patrick isn’t. Obviously Patrick is alive and wreaking revenge. So why kill Ron Wilson? Barnaby goes back to the Wilson’s house and discovers a cellar. In the cellar is Patrick. Ron Wilson saved him and hid him in the cellar. When Libby died of natural causes Patrick went through her photographs and found out he wasn’t their son Michael. He confronted Ron who fell down the stairs. Now knowing he was Patrick he went on to have revenge on the gang.
