Within the sanctuary of St. Paul's Cathedral, built in 1888, are nine plaques honouring men of Kamloops who did not return from World War I. This plaque was placed in memory of Corporal George Vivian Loney.

Corporal George Vivian Loney

Born on January 16th, 1895 in Kamloops, BC, George Loney enlisted in the U.S. Army in Iowa and died from wounds received in battle on October 22nd, 1918. He served in Company "M" of the 82nd Division of the 525th Infantry Regiment, American Expeditionary Forces. His gravesite is at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in Romagne, France.

Before enlisting in the US Army, Loney had lived in Kamloops. His parents, George and Carline, arrived there in about 1880 where George Senior took on the job of ferryman on the Thompson River in Kamloops and became the unofficial Poet Laureate of Kamloops.
