The sculpture represents a round of nude dancers performing the dance known as the Sardana.

The Sardana is a folk dance performed in public in Catalonia, an area covering, North Spain and South France. It is performed by a group of people forming a circle and joining hands. link

In 1950 the organisation Obra del Ballet Popular was formed to promote the Sardana dance. Subsequently starting in 1960 a town known as the Ciutat Pubilla de la Sardana is picked as a location to hold a festival celebrating the dance. The honour was awarded to Banyuls in 1977. link

The sculpture is situated in a small paved park area between the beach and the esplanade and stands on a granite slab.
