Within the sanctuary of St. Paul's Cathedral, built in 1888, are nine plaques honouring men of Kamloops who did not return from World War I. This plaque was placed in memory of Sergeant George Harold Walkley.

Sergeant George Harold Walkley

Born in France on December 4th, 1894, George was the son of Edwin and Alice Walkley, of Kamloops, BC. Sergeant Walkley was a member of the 54th Kootenay Battalion, Canadian Infantry, Canadian Expeditionary Forces, in World War I. He enlisted at Vernon, British Columbia on August 28th, 1915 at the age of 21 and was killed in battle of causes unknown on November 18th, 1916, barely one year later. His gravesite is at Vimy Memorial in Pas de Calais, France, where the names of 11,000 Canadians missing and presumed dead can be found engraved on a large memorial cairn.
