And while Kingswear Station is at the end of the track, it is not the end of the journey from Paddington.
Dartmouth Station connects with Kingswear by passenger ferry across the River Dart.
The branch line has been in operation since Tuesday August 16, 1864. At one time main line passenger trains served Kingswear straight through from Paddington, which is why the Kingswear station platform is quite lengthy. The large signal box is a fairly recent addition and actually houses offices for the railway company; in the early 1960s there was a small signal box located just beyond the grade crossing. A turntable was also in operation north and east of the station; it was demolished and is now a marina. The track on this branch line was constructed as broad gauge (7 feet 1/4 inch) until it was converted to standard gauge (4 feet 8-1/2 inches) in May 1892.
