This is the memorial of the victims of The Battle of Gitschin [CZ: Jicín] (visit link) . It was a battle of the Austro-Prussian War on June 29, 1866. The battle ending with a Prussian victory over the Austrian forces.

Battle at Jicín
After losing the battle at Mnichovo Hradiste (28.6.1866) the Austrian 1st Army Corps, led by the cavalry general Clam-Gallas and together with the Royal Saxon Army Corps (Crown Prince Albert) and the 1st light cavalry unit of Major General Edelsheim, proceeded in the early hours of 20th June 1866 from Sobotka and Libán to Jicín. At the castle of Kost there were clashes with Prussian divisions. Both allied corps began to build fortifications at Jicín, following the line Ohavec - Homi Lochov - Prachov - Podulší - Zámezí - Železnice, unaware of the order from high command to concentrate all the Austrian army corps around Horice, Miletín and Josefov.

The 1st Prussian Army began the attack on Jicín during the morning, with a combined force of 3 army corps. At 4.00 p.m. the 5th Prussian division came along the Turnov road to attack the position of the 1st light cavalry division at Dílce. After repelling the Prussians the Saxon brigade of Colonel Boxberg, assisted by Crown Prince Albert, took this defensive position. The Saxon brigade of Colonel Hausen took the post at Kbelnice. At this time, at about 5.00 p.m., the vanguard of the 3rd Prussian division, moving from Sobotka, attacked the position of Colonel Abel's brigade (infantry regiments no. 35 and 72 and the foresters battalion no. 22) from the 3rd Army Corps. The Prussians went round the Austrian positions to the right and at Ohavec attacked the brigade of Major General Ringesheim (infantry regiments no. 42 and 73 and the foresters battalion no. 26).

At about 6.00 p.m. there was a frontal assault by the Prussian 2nd Army Corps. All the remaining Austrian brigades were caught up in the heavy fighting: those of Major General Piret at Železnice (infantry regiments no. 18 and 45 and the foresters battalion no. 29), Major General Poschacher at Podulší and on Brada (infantry regiments no. 30 and 34 and the foresters battalion no. 18) as well as those of Colonel Leiningen south of Podulší (infantry regiments no. 33 a 38 and the foresters battalion no. 32). At 7.00 p.m. Crown Prince Albert received the delayed order to retreat. There followed the chaotic withdrawal of the Austrian-Saxon army through Jicín to Miletín and Horice. In the confusion the Prussian units got into the town, although the presence of mind of the Saxon commander of Colonel Hausen's brigade prevented an even greater catastrophe. The Prussians were pushed out of the town and the Saxons covered their retreat, which continued throughout the following day as far as Hradec Králové and Josefov.

In the battle at Jicin the Austrian 1st and the Saxon Army Corps lost a total of 210 officers, 5 280 men and 222 horses. The Prussian losses were 71 officers, 1 485 men and 56 horses.
