Tallman State Park has sports and recreational facilities, but its location on the Piedmont overlooking Hudson River and the tidewater marsh at the base are its best assets.

In Piedmont, off US Route 9, is Tallman Mountain State Park.

To get to the park, go on US Route 9 to Rockland Road on the east side, and turn right at the sign on the east side for the park. Pass through the shack - it was unoccupied during our visit - and find a parking space in one of the lots.

From the park web page:

"Tallman Mountain State Park comprises wooded country on the easterly slope of the Palisades uplands overlooking the Hudson and Piermont Marsh, which lies between the river and the slope. The marsh is part of the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve. The park operates as a day-use area, offering a running track, tennis courts, playfield, cross country skiing, a walking trail, hiking and picnic areas.

Pets

Dogs only, must be on a leash not more than 6 feet. Not allowed in building, camping, picnic or bathing areas or on walkways."

At the time of visit, we encountered trailers and people working on filling a movie. We walked down to the marsh and walked around the stone stadium. There was a stone building nearby where the information center/ranger station was located, who helped orient us within the park. There was no fee collected in our visit.

By far the most important asset to the park is the tidewater marsh. A kiosk explains that this marsh is the largest one currently existing on the Hudson River. We saw an osprey carrying a snake there.
