The Catalan town of Collioure has been fought over in history and although part of France today in 1493 was Spanish and ruled over by the King of the island of Mallorca.

According to this Dutch website Spain having recently expelled the occupying force of the Moors was trying to re-establish their national identity expelled Jewish people from the nation.

The Jews were given the opportunity to stay if they converted to Christianity, but in 1493 the last Jews who refused to convert left the town of Collioure on the sailing ships Santa Maria and Sant Cristofol.

The steel sculpture by Francesca Caruana forms a sail, billowing in the wind supported by a metal mast. It is situated on the esplanade at the base of the wall of the Royal Castle at Collioure which at the time was owned by the King of Mallorca.

There is a plaque underneath the sculpture in both French and Catalan.
