Sommerau is a small hamlet in Homburg valley. It is located between Diepflingen and Rümlingen, but is officially part of the municipality of Gelterkinden that is located north of the hill.

The railway station opened in 1857 connecting Sissach to Läufelfingen. In 1858 the Hauenstein summit tunnel opened and connected Basel with Olten. This line became one of the busiest in Switzerland and Sommerau was the only station in the valley north of Läufelfingen.

In 1916 the Hauenstein base tunnel opened and turned the original track into a lesser side line. Since then this line has not been used by long distance traffic any more on a regular base. The other municipalities in the valley got their own stations, so that Sommerau is not very important any more. But it is a popular starting point for hiking in the area.

The line is the S9 of the Basel commuter rail system. There is one train every hour to Olten or Sissach.
