The film is set in a public school in the 1930s. Guy Bennett is gay, and his friend, Tommy Judd, is a Marxist. Bennett’s homosexuality is resented by many in the school, particularly after a gay pupil, Martineau, hangs himself in the chapel. Bennett is particularly disliked by Fowler, a house captain with military ambitions. Fowler intercepts a love letter between Bennett and another pupil, Harcourt. Fowler uses the letter to deprive Bennett of becoming a top prefect.

Judd, on the other hand, is reluctant to become a prefect, because of his Marxist ideology. However, Judd’s hatred of Fowler makes him challenge Fowler for the position of Head of House.

Bennett resents not being made a top prefect. It does, however, make him realise that being openly gay will hinder his chosen career as a diplomat. Bennett goes on to be a diplomat and later defects to the USSR.
