"Old Ben was a legendary but real character who was in Avalon from 1898 into the 1920s. Ben was a large and unusually friendly seal. He would affably pose for snapshots on the pleasure pier and accept a raw fish snack in payment. Swimmers remember an occasional intimate nudge as he swam by. The sculpture to commemorate Old Ben was created by Stanley Rosin. It was given to the city of Avalon by Hermine and Stanley Rosin in gratitude to his father, Bernath Rosin, an Avalon pioneer of 1886. Placing of the sculpture and this plaque was a bicentennial project of the Avalon beautiful association in September 1975."
