The Sultana was built in 1863 and was 260' long. It ran from St. Louis to New Orleans sometimes for the military to carry troops. In 1865 it was bringing troops home who were released from prison camps in the south. While in port in Vicksburg for some repairs 100's of soldiers streamed on board overloading the boat. At Memphis while under full steam the boilers exploded killing 1800 people 791 from Ohio. The marker is in Alliance City Cemetery honoring the men from Company F from Stark County.
