The present Pecos County Courthouse is the fourth building for this purpose. The second, third and fourth courthouses were all built upon this same courthouse square.

At the corner of S Main and W Callaghan Streets, which is one of the corners of the county courthouse square, stands a plaque mounted on a pole as part of a self-guided tour informational marker. It gives a thorough summary of the history of the Pecos County Courthouses. It reads:
"In 1875 Pecos County was officially organized and St. Gall, later named Fort Stockton, was designated as its county seat of government. The current Pecos County Courthouse is the fourth since the county's founding. The first (1875) was officially designated and located in the adobe "Johnson House", the second (1878), third (1883), and fourth (1912) were built on the present site. A major renovation in the 1930's removed a central dome from the building's roof."
The cornerstone on the present building is dated 1912. The stone is mounted at the southeast corner of the building at about eye level. The stone used is a light gray marble.
