The man:
Berthold V was born in Freiburg in 1160; he became Duke of Zähringen after the death of his father Berthold V in 1186. He died 1218 in Freiburg. He founded Bern 1191. Berthold V was the last of his dynasty. After his death in 1218 the Zähringer lands were split among other noble families, the city of Bern became a free imperial city.
The statue:
The statue is called Zähringerdenkmal. It was created in 1847 and erected near the cathedral. 1968 it was relocated to its current location between Nydegg church and the bridge.
The statue is showing Berthold V accompanied by a young bear, the heraldic animal of Bern.
