Bear Park in the east of Bern is a place where bears, the heraldic animals of the city are kept. This zoo dated back to at least 1513; during the centuries it was located in different places in the city, the current location opened 1857. As the old bear pits did not comply with today's standards of animal welfare anymore, the area was extended with a large open area at the riverside. The new complex opened in 2009.
The donated bricks are the result of a fund raising campaign, every donator of 100 Swiss Francs got a paved brick in this walkway through the area. It was obviously a success, this walk contains maybe twelve or fifteen thousand bricks.
