Chappell Hill's NRHP Main Street Historic District is an area covering 36 buildings, most of them built between 1850 and 1915 and reflecting the many variations in architectural style within that period in history. For more information on this particular Historic District, please see the following waymark: (visit link)

The founding of the town of Chappell Hill is contributed to Mary Hargrove Haller who purchased a 100-acre site in this part of Texas on February 2, 1847 and subsequently commissioned a survey and the plotting of town lots. Just three years later, Mary Haller and her husband Jacob began building a two-story frame house now known as the "Stagecoach Inn" at the northwest corner of the center of that new town. In 1851, that same "Inn" was subsequently acquired by Mary's mother, Mrs. Charlotte Hargrove who was married to W. D. Hargrove, Jacob Haller's business partner.

Closely associated with the Hallers and the Hargroves are two other houses to the north of that Inn: the Permelia Haynie House (built by John A. Haynie and Permelia Hargrove, with Permelia being Mary's sister) and the Jacob Haller house, another residence built by the Hallers.

John A. Haynie was a distinguished Methodist preacher and son of Reverend John Haynie who was appointed the first Chaplain of the Republic of Texas by Sam Houston. Haynie was reportedly the first Protestant minister to preach a sermon in Travis County in 1839.

The Permelia Haynie House, constructed in the 1850's, was built on landed deeded to John and Permilia by Permilia's sister Mary and Jacob Haller. Per the official NRHP records, it is a:

"One-story house built with native cedar, hand-hewn and locally sawn. The current house form, which was adapted to a late Victorian style, evolved around an original small frame house constructed in the 1850s. Frame partially of pine with cypress siding. 4/4 wooden- sash windows and a single entrance door with transom. Gabled roof with composition shingles. L-shape plan has front gallery supported by turned posts with stylized scroll brackets. Porch frieze contains row of spindles with knobs. Chamfered bay on north end, as well as front gallery, added ca. 1900. In 1910 present kitchen plumbing and bath installed. Original detached kitchen of rough cedar boards situated 20 feet west of house, was demolished ca. 1945. During the 1940s, south room, asbestos siding, and bargeboard in gable end added. An underground cistern constructed of local brick originally located north of house."

The house also includes a Texas Historical marker, which reads:

"Victorian house built on land deeded [to] Permelia Haynie (Mrs. John Haynie) by sister and her husband. Framework is of hand-hewn cedar with square nails and wooden pegs. After 1900 storm and later, bay window, kitchen, and other rooms were added."
