Water storage is critical for the Moore County area. Golf courses, horse pastures and large residential areas tax the available ground water which is the primary source in the area. There are no large natural lakes and or large flowing rivers within the reaches of the county. With the topography of the county's gentle rolling sandhills there are not really suitable places to dam up the narrow and slow flowing Lumber River or more properly called Drowning Creek with its smaller tributaries feeding it. The exception of the Deep River in the far northern reaches of the county which is restrained by dams in the upper regions of the river's path. The Deep River in this area lies in an area of red clay and some rock beds but would inundate prime farm and residential lands. The area to is not amenable to dam construction with the bedrock deeper under the red clay overburden.
