Derby Fire Department serves the northern part of Richmond County over to the Moore County line and up to the Montgomery County line. The tower is supplied by a deep well to replenish fire tankers as needed.

The water tower at one time was a big necessity for the fire department. Now there is a first class county water system that uses hydrants to supply water for firefighting. Still, there are times when tankers must be used and can be refilled at the station as the need arises. It stands ready to refill the trucks as in older times.
