I found no information on J. W. Courtney.
This is one of the earliest Woodmen markers I have found. The seal is only scratched into the surface - not the deeply carved seal one normally sees. The headstone is of a log frame supporting a scroll. The inscription on the scroll reads:
COURTNEY
(Woodmen Seal)
J.W. Courtney
Born Aug. 12, 1876
Died Dec. 2, 1901
Erected by the Woodmen of the World
