An historical marker at the entrance to the First Presbyterian Church in Bemidji tells about the first pastor, Rev. Samuel A. Blair who came by canoe to establish the church in 1896. The text reads:
In Memoriam, Rev. Samuel A. Blair, July 15, 1864 - May 15, 1958.
Sunday school missionary of the Presbyterian Church sent by Duluth Presbytery to Northern Minnesota.
In the spring of 1896 he came by canoe and portage up the Mississippi River with an Indian guide to the shore of Lake Bemidji – and here helped organize the First Presbyterian Church, August 24, 1896.
Later this church was served by the famed “Sky Pilot” Frank Higgins – Missionary to the Lumberjacks.
