Thomas Cass was born in Ireland in 1821. He and his family emigrated to Boston. At the start of the Civil War, on June 11, 1961, Boston Pilot publisher Patrick Donohue funded the formation of the predominately Irish-American Ninth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry under the command of Colonel Thomas Cass.

On June 30, 1861, the Ninth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry arrived in the Washington, D.C. to join the Army of the Potomac under the command of Major General George B. McClellan. On June 26, 1862 the regiment participated in the Battle of Mechanicsville, VA and on July 1, 1862 they took part in the Battle of Malvern Hill, VA where Colonel Thomas Cass was severely wounded. He died from his wounds, on July 12, 1862, in Boston, MA and was buried with military honors in Mount Auburn Cemetery.

An 8' high by 2.25' square bronze statue of Thomas Cass stands on a 6.5' high by 3.75' square granite base. Colonel Thomas Cass is wearing a Civil War uniform with a knee length coat and a broad brimmed hat. His arms folded across his chest. The sculpture was created by Richard Edwin Brooks and cast at the E. Gruet Jne Fondeur of Paris. The monument was dedicated on September 14, 1899.
