This tid-bit of history is posted along the bike path at Lake Bemidji State Park and tells about the sluiceway that used to be along this creek. The text reads:
Bass Lake Sluiceway.
It is believed that this ditch-like formation is a remnant of the logging sluiceway which was used to float logs from the Bass Lake vicinity into Lake Bemidji.
Initially the waters of northern Minnesota were the links between the logging areas and the mills. As harvesting areas were located further from these water highways, other transportation methods were needed. Eventually the railroads filled this purpose. Nationally, rail transportation peaked in 1916.
(photo) Behind the logging dam, logs accumulated. The sluiceway funneled the logs downstream. Without these structures there would not have been enough water to move the timber.
