This is the last surviving mine sampling works in the city, from when it was a gold rush town.

The plaque says, "One of the oldest standing building and the only surviving min sampling works in the city, this property recalls Boulder's early years as a bustling mining supply center. Its founding coincided with discovery of precious metals in the mountains and a resulting gold fever that spurred rapid settlement in the area. Nathaniel P. Hill had the building constructed in 1876 following his discovery of a more efficient method for the testing and extraction of precious metals from ore. Hill served as the mayor of Blackhawk and in 1879 was elected to the US Senate. In 1892, W. J. Chamberlain took over the sampling company which, at the time, was described by the Boulder daily camera as having "a monopoly on the ores of Boulder County." The building housed mining businesses until 1965."
