The plaque says, "This statue commemorated the Arapano Indians who have lived on the plains of Colorado since the 1790's and chief Niwot, who with his people spent the winter in the Boulder Valley. It stands in tribute to that sensitivity and respect for nature which inherent in the Indian culture."
