The Red River Ox Cart
The Red River Ox Cart provided the first mode of land transportation in the development of Western Canada. The ox drawn carts were used extensively during the pre-railroad era in the carrying of trade goods, furs and farm produce to and from the settlement at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers which became the City of Winnipeg in 1874. The carts were made locally entirely from wood fastened together by strips of buffalo hide and capable of carrying loads up to 1200 pounds over rugged terrain. The Red River Cart is an important part of our heritage.
