The bridge was built around 1980 by British Waterways to replace an earlier lift bridge. At this point the canal is 10 feet 10 inches wide.

The bridge is normally left in the open position because there is a pedestrian footbridge next to it, and so it only needs to be swung over the canal when vehicles or farm animals need to cross the bridge.
The bridge is manually operated and has a push arm to control it. It is normally left locked and boat owners and authorised users have a key to unlock it.
