Located outside the home of the Gold Hill Historical Museum are a number of preserved machines on public display. One particular machine residing here is a chile mill and contains a placard that highlights its history and reads:
CHILE MILL
Ore mill sometimes called an "Arrastra"
Originally manufactured around 1900 and put to use by Cletus
Rogers at Brush Creek Mine, near Downeyville, California.
Brought to Oregon by the Rue family to use on Butte Creek, but
not put to use.
Donated by Mary Rue, with thanks to Leo Hoag, Rick
Chamberlain and Gary Vincent, who helped us get it.
Powered by gas or electric to crush "soft ore".
Was not too efficient.
