One of the most prolific players in Baseball History, John Peter “Honus” Wagner was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on February 27, 1874. By the age of 12 he had dropped out of school and was working in the coal mines. During his spare time he and his brothers played baseball on the sandlots in the Pittsburgh area. He began his professional career with the National Leagues, Louisville Colonels in 1897 but when the League contracted following the 1899 season, Honus followed Barney Dreyfuss to Pittsburgh where he was become one of the greatest players the game of baseball would ever see. His professional playing career spanned 17-years where he amassed 3,430 hit and a batting average of .329. After his playing career ended he remained with the Pirates 39 more years as a coach. He was one of the first five players inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. The Honus Wagner T206 Baseball Card issued by the American Tobacco Company is one of the rarest and most expensive in existence. Only 57 cards are known to exist and in 2013 a Honus Wagner T206 Card sold at auction for $2.1 million. Honus Wagner died on December 6, 1955 at the age of 81. He is buried in the Jefferson Memorial Cemetery in Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania.

Honus Wagner was born on February 27, 1874 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He dropped out of school at the age of 12 to work in the coal mines. He and his brother Albert played sandlot baseball in their spare time and soon were recognized to have exceptional talent. In 1897, Honus began his professional baseball career in 1897 with the Louisville Colonels where he played 61 games, hitting 338 an was one of the league’s best hitters. In 1900 the league went from 12 to 8 teams, and the Colonels were eliminated. Wagner moved with Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss to Pittsburgh where Honus would become a legend. During the 1900 season Honus lead the league with a 381 batting average and a .573 slugging percentage. During his 17-year career, Honus had 3,430 hits, 722 stolen bases and a career batting average of .329. Honus retired as a player following the 1917 season, but remained as a remained with the Pirates for the next 39-years as a coach. A little known fact about Honus Wagner is that he ran for Allegheny County Sheriff in 1928 but lost the election, but was appointed deputy sheriff in 1942. In 1936 Honus Wagner, joined Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, and Babe Ruth as the first five players inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Honus Wagner died on December 6, 1955 at the age of 81. He is buried in the Jefferson Memorial Cemetery in the Pleasant Hills area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
