The railway line originally connected Low Moor with Thornhill, for much of the way at the Low Moor end it followed the route of the River Spen.

In 2001 a stretch of the line between Dewsbury and Oakenshw was converted to a cycling and walking route called the Spen Valley Greenway. This website has details of many railway routes taht can now be used as walking routes including this one.

Although much of the route passes through open countryside it also passes close to nearby towns and housing estates. There are many access points along the whole route of the greenway.

The new route was sponsored by SUSTRANS and maintained by their voluntary rangers. It is a registered charity that promotes sustainable transport especially with cycling and walking routes.

The route is called the Spen Valley Greenway and forms part of National Route 66 which will eventually link Manchester with Hull.
