Porridge, and its sequel, Going Straight, feature Norman Stanley Fletcher, an habitual criminal. He is an inmate of HM Prison Slade, supposedly in Cumbria. He shares a cell with a first offender Lennie Godber, who Fletcher takes under his wing. They are looked after by two warders, Mr Mackay, a stickler for discipline, and Mr Barraclough, who is regularly taken for a ride by the prisoners. Porridge portrays Fletchers life inside, Going straight follows his release.
