Gladstone has been known as Happy Rock for years and as a means to increase tourism, the local Chamber of Commerce held a logo contest in 1984 for the design of a mascot that would represent Happy Rock.
Jerry Wickstead submitted the winning entry although it wasn't until 1993 that this 'Happy Rock' was constructed and installed.
It's fiberglass, stands 36 feet tall, weighs 3000 pounds and cost $92,000.
Happy Rock was featured on a Canada Post stamp in 2010 (visit link) .
