The bridge is a twin arch bridge that crosses the river Calder and the footpath next to the river.

The railway line, which became known as the Leeds New Line was opened in 1900 and carried a mixture of passenger and freight traffic.

The line closed to passenger traffic in 1960 making this bridge redundant.

Battyeford railway station used to be just to the north east of here and this stone arch bridge stands next to a newer girder bridge that provided extra capacity for trains entering or leaving the station.
