Liebesschlösser an der Marmorbrücke - Villmar, Hessen, Germany - Love Padlocks on Waymarking.com

Love padlocks are becoming more and more popular. On the railing of the marble bridge in Villmar, too, a few love padlocks have been fixed. Given the small number, couples probably have started doing this just recently.

A German theologian has this to say about this custom:

"Die Liebesschlösser gibt es seit gut fünfzehn Jahren rund um die Welt. Ob in Moskau, New York, Paris und Rom, ob in Kassel, Marburg oder in Frankfurt am Main: Überall finden sich an Brückengeländern einfache Vorhängeschlösser aus Eisen. Man lässt sich die Initialen eingravieren und vielleicht noch ein Herz dazu. Dann geht das Paar auf eine Brücke, beide versprechen sich ihre Liebe, schließen das Schloss am Geländer an und zum Abschluss werfen sie den Schlüssel von der Brücke herunter ins Flusswasser. Dort fällt er in die Tiefe, neben ihm dutzende von weiteren Schlüsseln, die zu den Schlössern gehören, die man oben auf der Brücke am Geländer sehen kann.
