The Pyhala homestead is located on the east edge of Heritage Park in Embarrass. Finnish immigrants moved into northern Minnesota in the late 19th Century and spent the next 50 years developing the land for farming. The Pyhala family purchased the 80 acre farm in 1909 from Charles Mattson who first homesteaded the property in 1890. Mikko Pyhala worked on the railroad and as a logger to help support his family of 17 children. The last child to live on the farm moved from the area in 1983. Most of the buildings are log with the exception of the cement block home. Buildings are labeled and a tour is available during the summer. Visitors are also invited to take the self-tour.
