The memorial was built in 1924 and had an inscription on the front face commemorating World War I. After the second World War an additional inscription was added to the rear face of the memorial.

BBC website tells us that in 1958 a major trunk road, the A1, was built near the village and the memorial was moved to the church yard of St. James. This site however was on a steep grassy bank and was not suitable for some people to attend the annual remembrance service.
When a new bypass was recently built this gave the opportunity to move the memorial back to its original site, and give it a clean.
The World War I inscription on the front face is as follows.
