Very few house/barn combinations are left in the United States, and the Seitaneimi Housebarn is one of the last ones still standing. It was built by Alex Seitaneimi, a Finnish immigrant, between 1907 and 1913, and housed his family of five, livestock, and hay all under the same roof. The idea of combing living space helped keep the house and barn warm and provided more land for farming. The foundation for the structure is dry stacked stone which endures the heaving frost better than some of the more traditional methods. Note the ramp used to get the horses into the hayloft. The building is in the process of restoration.
