This marker to a detachments of the 21st Michigan Infantry is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. After the battle of Chickamauga the regiment, in command of Lieutenant Colonel S. K. Bishop, was detached from its brigade by order of General Thomas, and was placed under General Smith, Chief Engineer of the Department. This is one of two markers dedicated to the 21st Michigan Infantry on the battlefield.

LIEUTS. A. E. BARR AND C. E. BELNAP
COMMANDING

On the morning of Sept. 20th, this detachment was the extreme right of Sheridan's Division, rallying from skirmish line about the Glenn House, separated from main command, surrounded by the enemy, they held this position more than one hour until relieved by Wilder's Brigade.

Julius O. Campbell, Private Co. H, right of the skirmish line was killed in the road south near the base of this hill.

Short Significance Description:

The marker contributes to the national significance of the park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description

4' x 1'6" x 10' high, the monument is a rock-faced vertical slab with a bronze inscription tablet and a bronze state seal.
