The Dartmouth, one of the ships boarded during the Boston Tea Party, was the first ship built in New Bedford and was launched near this spot.

The Boston Tea Party (visit link) was a political protest which escalated into the beginning of the American Revolution. One of the ships boarded in the protest is commemorated here.

"This plaque is mounted on the William Tallman Warehouse at the foot of Centre Street in New Bedford. The plaque has a relief depiction of the ship and reads:

"NEAR THIS SPOT IN 1767
THE FIRST SHIP BUILT
IN NEW BEDFORD
WAS LAUNCHED
THE DARTMOUTH
FRANCIS ROTCH, OWNER

SHE WAS ONE OF THE VESSELS
BOARDED BY THE
