Construction began in 1872 on this light - located on the NW shore of Presque Isle. It was meant to replace the Erie Land Lighthouse as this site was considered a better location to warn ships of the hazard of large spit of land jutting out into the lake.
The original height of the light was 40 feet, however in 1896 the tower was raised to 73 feet.
The lighthouse currently is not accessible to the public, however there are plans (2014) to lease the lighthouse to a non-profit entity will allow the public to visit & climb the 76 steps to the light.
