The Erie Land Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and was built in 1867 - the 3rd light on this site. The first two, built in 1818 & 1858, proved unstable in the sandy soil.
The current 49-foot light was constructed using a foundation of 8 courses of solid oak timbers and a ton of crushed limestone covered with cement. The Fresnel light cast a beam 17 miles outward until removed in 1899.
In 2003, the lantern room was restored and a light added, allowing this landmark to once again shine a light out into Lake Erie.
