Guglielmo Marconi established the first United States transatlantic wireless telegraph station and sent the first transatlantic wireless telegram from what is now Marconi Beach in the Cape Cod National Seashore, South Wellfleet, MA.

Italian-Irish electrical engineer Guglielmo Marconi at age 16 successfully transmitted wireless telegraph signals within his mother's, Annie Jameson's, garden. Marconi gradually increased the distance between radio transmitter and receiver. At 23, he and his mother traveled to England and, on March 27, 1899, sent a radio signal across the English Channel.

Marconi's goal was to send a signal across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1900, he set up a transmitting station at Poldhu, Cornwall and stations at Signal Hill, Newfoundland and in South Wellfleet, MA on on Cape Cod, MA. The Cape Cod station was on a on a high bluff in now known as Marconi Beach. The South Wellfleet had a circular series of twenty 200-foot ship's masts set back 165 feet from the edge of the bluff.

A monument at Marconi Beach marks this historical event. The bronze plaque is inscribed:
